You ever have that feeling where you have something that you really want to do, but you’re scared something fierce about doing it because it is not exactly, 2000% the way That Guy Over There did it? And you just rock on your laurels and go shiiiiiiii I should I want to do that thing too but ugh gosh dark it it’s not ready yet
Show of hands?
Yes! So have I. I want you to know you’re not alone.
And today, I need to tell you about Imperfect Action and why you should embrace it in your day-to-day life.
What is Imperfect Action?
Imperfect action is action that is imperfect. In entrepreneurship, imperfect action is taking action and not letting obstacles stop you. Knowing that you can always revise what you release. To start now, do what you can NOW. You can always do what you can right now.
This does not mean you release crappy material. Releasing crappy material is a no-no. We do not release crappy material. But! Taking that action means that we have started, and that we can revise. A quote attributed to Jodi Picoult, author of the New York Times Bestselling novel My Sister’s Keeper goes, “You cannot edit a blank page.” (if this is a misattribution, please correct me and I’ll fix it post-haste!)
Where did I learn about Imperfect Action?
I learned about imperfect action in a Mastermind group led by Tony Robbins (yes that Tony Robbins) and some other guys in a 7-day brand building challenge. I didn’t build my brand, but the Mastermind group, which continues to run today, a year later, still bears a lot of fruit to be cleaned off the trees. I poke my head in every now and again and see what is going on. Everyone is trying to be an entrepreneur through an online course, but I do think it’s starting to deviate a bit away from that as the challenge has ended and the group has become kind of an entrepreneurial Facebook one. I am a lurker, in other words. In lurking, there is still plenty to bring back to the nest.
What Imperfect Action did you take this week? This past year? Anytime?
In other words: write! design! draw! code! program! Because everything you can do right now can be relaunched, revitalized, and rejuvenated for a new audience, and your current audience will appreciate your previous efforts.
What scary action did you take recently? Recently can be whenever. Let me know—I’d love to hear from you!
